This Bible Study is published at: http://shepherdboy.journalspace.com/ and http://shepherdboy-mydailywalk.blogspot.com It is based on the Lutheran Book of Worship 3-year lectionary (for public worship), "Prayers of the Day..." (Propers).* It is based, with only minor variations, on the Revised Common Lectionary, used by many denominations, including the Episcopal, Lutheran, Presbyterian, and Methodist churches. The daily readings are the Propers (Lections) for the following Sunday, so that the daily devotions can prepare us for worship. This Bible Study was originally published at http://shepherdboy.journalspace.com/, based on the Lutheran Book of Worship two-year Daily Lectionary for personal devotions* The daily readings are according to a Calendar based on the Church Year, which begins on the first Sunday of Advent, usually sometime at the end of November in the year preceding the secular calendar year. This site contains the Bible reading calendars for each year from 2004-2061. The calendar for each year has hyperlinks to the daily study for each week.
The Archives are accessable from the navigation menu on the top right, in either of two ways. You can select the Archive Index, and select the year and week of the lection, or you can select by week from odd or even year lections.
Over the course of two two-year cycles, the Lord has led me to develop the content and style of this Bible Study. It takes about five minutes to read my journal entry. I would suggest that you first pray, asking for understanding and guidance by the Holy Spirit, and then read the lections from the Bible. Then read my journal entry. Each entry first paraphrases each of the three lections, then comments on the common theme of each lection, and suggests conclusions. The entire devotional can be done in under 20 minutes. Try to recall the day's message throughout the day.

In the past 30 years, I have come to a saving personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, and I have come to the realization that the meaning and purpose of life is to "seek the Lord, in the hope that (we) might feel after and find Him, although He is not far from each one of us", as the Bible says in Acts17:26-27. My testimony is that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, as He has said in John 14:6. If you don't know Jesus personally as your Lord and Savior. you don't know the joy and peace that you are missing! I was raised in the Lutheran Church (ELCA). I came under the influence and teaching of Pastor Chuck Smith of Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa, CA., and of Pastor Greg Laurie of Harvest Ministries in Riverside, CA. in the late 1970's, and accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior while I was a member of the Lutheran Church . I am currently attending a Southern Baptist Congregation. The daily lectionaries (schedule of daily readings) which I am using are: the 2 year Daily Lectionary, p. 179-192, and the 3-year weekly lectionary, Prayers of the Day, Psalms and Lessons, p. 13-41, from the Lutheran Book of Worship, Augsburg Publication House, Minneapolis, and Board of Publications, Lutheran Church in America, Philadelphia, 1978.

All have sinned and fall short of God's righteousness (Romans 3:23; 1 John 1:8-10). The penalty for sin is (eternal) death (Romans 6:23). It is appointed for humans to die once and then comes judgment (not reincarnation) (Hebrews 9:27). All who have ever lived will be held accountable to Jesus Christ for what they has done in life (John 5:28-29). Those who have trusted and obeyed Jesus will receive eternal life in heaven with Jesus; those who have rejected Jesus and not obeyed Jesus' teaching will receive eternal destruction and eternal death in Hell with Satan and all the wicked (Matthew 25:31-46; 2 Thessalonians 1:5-10). God loves us and does not want us to perish (John 3:16). God gave his only son Jesus Christ to die as a sacrifice for our sins so that we woudn't have to die for them ourselves (Romans 5:8). Jesus is God's only provision for our salvation (Acts 4:12; John 14:6) We are saved by grace (unmerited favor) through faith (obedient trust) in Jesus Christ; not by doing "good deeds" (Ephesians 2:8-9). One must receive Jesus as his Lord and Savior (John 1:12). How to receive Jesus: we must open the door of our heart and invite Jesus in (Revelation 3:20). Christian assurance: "And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who has not the Son has not life. I write this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life" (1 John 5:11-12). The Holy Spirit is the seal and guarantee that one is in Christ and has eternal life (2 Corinthians 1:22; Ephesians 1:13-14; Romans 8:9b, 11, 15-16).

In a survey, eighty-seven percent of American people said they believe that God hears and has the power to answer prayer (but note that eighty-seven percent of the American People do not regularly read the Bible or attend church). I assert that there are conditions which must be met in order to expect one’s prayers to be answered: John 15:7 – “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask what you will and it shall be done for you.” Notice the *If*. Note also that this was addressed to his *disciples*, in Jesus’ farewell discourse at the Last Supper. False Teachings

There are two major false teachings being taught in the (nominal) “Church” today which existed in the first century Church and are refuted in the New Testament.
Legalism
One is “legalism,” salvation by doing “good works;” the “circumcision party” who insisted that Gentile converts must keep Jewish law, including circumcision and dietary laws, dealt with here (see also Galatians 2:12, 16, 21-3:14; 5:1-5, Ephesians 2:8-10).
Cheap Grace:
The other is “Cheap Grace:” salvation by grace (unmerited favor; a free gift), without the obligation of discipleship and obedient trust; “Libertinism;” “Nicolaitanism;” false freedom from self-discipline; i.e., licentiousness; (see Ephesians 4:17-24; 1 Corinthians 5:1-13; 6:9-20), which is also dealt with here.
Each is a deviation, in opposite directions, from the central apostolic doctrine of the New Testament (Ephesians 2:8-10).
Spiritual Rebirth:
A ramification of the false teaching of "Cheap Grace"* is the assertion that believers are automatically spiritually "born-agan" by some Church rite, such as water Baptism, or Confirmation (affirmation) of Baptism. This teaching not only doesn't help members, but actually causes them spiritual damage, by leading them to believe they do not need to seek the "baptism" of the Holy Spirit. Mainline denominations are teaching this false doctrine.
The reason the nominal Church is failing to make "born-again" disciples, in many instances, is because it is not being led by "born-again" disciples and apostles. It takes "born-again" disciples to make "born-again" disciples. The unregenerate (un-"reborn") don't know how, or they would not be unregenerate. If there are no "born-again" disciples in a denomination, how will there be "born-again" leaders? It is a case of the "blind" leading the "blind." It is like the fable of The Emperor's New Clothes:

Not only are the leaders struting around naked, believing that they are well-clothed, but so are the members!
The Church is the heir to the ministry of John the Baptizer, to call people to repent and be spiritually cleansed by water Baptism for the remission of sin (Luke 3:2-6), so that they are prepared to receive Jesus through the gift of the Holy Spirit. Only Jesus gives the gift ("baptism;" "anointing," "infilling") of the Holy Spirit (John 1:31-34), only to his disciples who believe in (trust and obey) Jesus (John 14:15-17). The gift of the indwelling Holy Spirit is a discernible ongoing event. One cannot be truly "born-again" without being conscious of it for oneself (Acts 19:2). Anyone not sure hasn't been!
My Daily Walk
The Holy Spirit is the seal and guarantee that one is in Christ and has eternal life (2 Corinthians 1:22; Ephesians 1:13-14; Romans 8:9b, 11, 15-16).

These videos are low-priced for purchase or rent. Prices listed at time of posting; check links for current prices, in DVD (American Bible Society videos are also available in VHS Tape) See particularly the American Bible Society Gospels which are word-for-word narration of the scripture text in their Contemporary English Version. They also have a number of other New Testament Books in video with word-for-word narration; see their site. I’ve also listed several Foreign Documentaries, which may not use straight Biblical text for narration. Straight scriptural narration is preferable; the documentaries may be more subjective, reflecting the producers’ personal interpretations. I haven’t seen any of these videos yet personally, except for the Gospel of John, but they are in my rental queue, and I will be reviewing them in the next couple weeks. I did see the Gospel of Luke Video New Media Bible in the word-for-word RSV and KJV in the early 1980’s. This is a great way to introduce children and teens to the Gospels. [Return to Top]
